Professional Development Plan

As a School Library Media Coordinator, developing and achieving professional development goals will enable me to fulfill my vision of establishing myself as a collaborative instructional partner, meeting the needs of the students I serve within my school. Completion of my MLIS degree will provide me with the confidence needed to demonstrate my effectiveness in developing a comprehensive library media program, focusing on the NC Professional School Library Media Coordinator Standards.

Year 1 Collaborative School/Community Partnerships

School Library Media Coordinators demonstrate leadership

  • Complete MLIS degree
  • Organize and promote two book fairs and multiple family night fundraising events to support the library by collaborating with the PTSA
  • Participate in the North Carolina School Library Media Association Conference and present information learned to district media coordinators to ensure awareness of current trends, issues, and best practices

  • Create a needs assessment for students and staff in order to improve the library program
  • Actively participate in English Language Arts Professional Learning Community Meetings and share ways to integrate print, digital, and media content within Google Classroom or Canvas
  • Facilitate media meetings with district level colleagues and share instructional strategies in a collaborative environment

Year 2 Strategic Planning

  • Create and submit a proposal and present at the North Carolina School Library Media Association Conference with a colleague.
  • Establish “lunch and learn” sessions featuring guest speakers and authors and advertise on library website
  • Work to promote four book fairs (2 Scholastic & 2 Barnes & Noble) as well as family fundraising events to support the library, collaborating with the PTSA.
  • Participate in North Carolina Technology in Education Society Conference and present to district media coordinators

  • Continue participating in English Language Arts and join Social Studies Professional Learning Community Meetings in order to share ways to conduct research and evaluate sources
  • Facilitate media meetings with district level colleagues and share instructional strategies in a collaborative environment that supports the NC Professional School Library Media Coordinator Standards, utilizing information from professionals followed on Twitter

  • Share library deficit data with principal and advocate for a yearly library budget
  • Collaborate with other media coordinators to further develop and analyze a collection development plan

Year 3 Advance the Library Program

School Library Media Coordinators implement a comprehensive 21st Century library media program.

  • Generate a new media center floor plan that will entice students to take part in the newly launched maker-space
  • Collaborate with other media coordinators in my district in order to share lesson plans and resources in digital formats.

School Library Media Coordinators build a learning environment that meets the instructional needs of a diverse population of students.

  • Develop cohesive partnerships with Science teachers by actively participating in Professional Learning Community Meetings and encourage ELA, SS, and SCI teachers to apply an inquiry-based approach to instructional design by being an involved instructional partner during co-taught lessons.

  • Seek and apply for grant opportunities to secure additional funding for maker-space
  • Strengthen the outreach of book fair and family fundraising events to support the library
  • Maintain involvement in the North Carolina School Library Media Association Conference and attend the North Carolina Technology in Education Society Conference  
  • Present an after school professional development workshop to colleagues within my district to enhance librarianship skills based on the conferences above

  • Re-evaluate the library website based on student and staff needs assessment
  • Continue to analyze and evaluate the collection development plan
  • Stress the importance of maintaining a library budget and secure funding from principal

Year 5 Leading the Way

School Library Media Coordinators demonstrate knowledge of learners and learning and promote effective instructional practices.

  • Encourage and establish scheduled meeting times for teachers to share and discuss insights gained from their Professional Learning Networks
  • Actively participate in core content and elective Professional Learning Community Meetings to design instruction that seamlessly integrates 21st century skills, information fluency, and digital literacy across the curriculum
